The main story of Coco.
To support her daughter Coco, Imelda left her family to pursue a shoemaking career, which is the Rivera family's central tale. Her great-great-grandson Miguel aspires to be a musician like Ernesto de la Cruz, the Mexican musician who is his idol. Despite his family's discouragement, Miguel steals a guitar from Imelda's mausoleum and plays a miraculous chord, revealing his incapacity to cross the bridge to the land of the living.
After Miguel returns to Imelda, she demands that he give up on his musical goals. Miguel makes his getaway and goes to his ancestor, Ernesto, for a blessing. Meet Héctor, a skeleton that used to play with Ernesto and passed away from chorizo consumption. Héctor borrows his pal Chicharrón's guitar and paints Miguel's face like a skeleton.
Imelda and the dead Riveras send Pepita to find Miguel, who manages to meet Frida Kahlo and Ernesto. They win a talent show to meet Ernesto, who is his opening act. Miguel plays "Remember Me" but loses to Héctor, who argues that he should not be allowed to be a musician. Imelda tries to manipulate Miguel, but he refuses.
Miguel meets Ernesto at a party, and they bond. Héctor confronts Miguel, realizing that his death was not accidental. Ernesto poisoned Héctor's tequila, and after his death, Ernesto used his songs and guitar to become famous. Ernesto betrays Héctor and Miguel, and they are put in a cenote pit.
Miguel reveals that Héctor's great-great-grandfather is Héctor, and Coco is starting to forget him. Imelda and the other dead Riveras find them, and Imelda agrees to help save Héctor. They infiltrate Ernesto's sunrise concert to retrieve Héctor's portrait, but the plan fails when Ernesto recognizes the plan. From there, the story moved on to the ending scenes.
